A resident of New York’s Chinatown since 1986, Richard Hsueh, founder of Chinese American Voice, has witnessed immigration patterns transform the language of his neighborhood. He was inspired to launch CAV, the first Mandarin-language station in NY, when most media outlets were serving primarily Cantonese and Taishanese speakers. Through the years, Hsueh has pioneered new initiatives to serve the changing population, like featuring Fujianese -language programs for newly arrived diaspora from Fuzhou. “Fu Chinese do not have a lot of ways to access programs in their own dialects from back home. Our radio station is a window into their local communities in China,” says Hsueh. CAV also offers nightly programs to teach basic English sentences.
